Undergraduate mentors are integral to the success of Scholars Latino Initiative. Mentors are selected through a rigorous application and interview process, and they are the links' Latino Initiative. Mentors are selected through a rigorous application and interview process, and they are the link between our Latino students and their goals of higher education. Having proven themselves to be qualified in college, our mentors offer insight, guidance, and motivation to help the SLI scholars achieve academically in high school and navigate their way to college. The relationships developed between mentors and students are meaningful and lasting, often going beyond the three-year commitment.
In addition to cultivating one-on-one relationships with SLI students, mentors are responsible for designing and facilitating the college prep and community service projects that make this program unique. Mentors work together to gauge the skills of students and tailor programs to best serve their individual needs. The dedicated and enthusiastic mentors establish lasting personal connections and root the program firmly in the UNC campus community.
