Campus E-mail and Onyen Assignment
Trusted Domains
[draft]
Departments running their own mail servers may qualify as a “trusted domain” if the following conditions are met:
- Identification of a formal mail administrator
- For departments under HIPAA regulations, this person will be responsible for requesting that the department’s staff’s Onyen email be forwarded to a departmental email account
- Maintenance of mail logs for a period of not less than five days
- Documented backup process
- Enforcement of strong passwords matching the existing Onyen password policy
- Expiration of passwords matching the existing Onyen password policy
- Adoption of the following policy on forwarding e-mail. Individuals who chose to forward e-mail from a trusted domain e-mail address to another e-mail address (e.g., @aol.com, @hotmail.com) will be required to acknowledge that they are accepting all risks and that the University cannot guarantee delivery. Having e-mail redirected does not absolve faculty, staff and students from the responsibilities associated with communication sent to their official e-mail address.
Meeting these criteria, the aliases for people within these departments can be set to resolve to a trusted domain address instead of an onyen@email.unc.edu account.
