The Sports Medicine Research Laboratory (SMRL) is dedicated to providing the community at large with current research that best addresses the needs of not only competitive athletes, but also to provide essential clinical research for recreational athletes in the general public.

2008 Human Movement Science Research Symposium

The Third Annual Human Movement Science Research Symposium will be hosted at The University of North Carolina on February 29, 2007. Faculty and students have been invited from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte, Wake Forest University, University of North Florida, Winston Salem State University, Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and East Carolina University. The abstract submission deadline is Friday, January 25, 2008 at 5:00 pm. Click here for a copy of the abstract submission guidelines.

Joseph Myers, PhD, ATC, completed a visiting professorship last semester at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Australia.

SMRL Concussion Research Group football-related research was recently highlighted on MSNBC and all national NBC News affiliate stations. Click here for the story.

SMRL Concussion Research Group had 3 companion papers published in the December 2007 issue of Neurosurgery (see publications section).

J. Troy Blackburn, PhD, ATC, was recently awarded the David H. Perrin Doctoral Dissertation Award. This award "recognizes outstanding doctoral student research, while supporting and encouraging research through the NATA Research and Education Foundation." Troy was presented this award at the 2007 NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia in Anaheim, CA. (June 2007)

Jason P. Mihalik, MS, CAT(C), ATC, was recently named the winner of the Doctoral Student Research Poster Presentation Award at the 2007 NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia in Anaheim, CA. (June 2007)

Jim T. Cavanaugh, PT, PhD was recently named the winner of the Kenneth L. Knight Outstanding Research Manuscript in Athletic Training Award at the 2007 NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia in Anaheim, CA. (June 2007)

Movers and Shakers

Joseph B. Myers

Michelle Boling, MS, ATC, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on Wednesday, April 2, 2008. She has recently accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Athletic Training at the University of North Florida located in Jacksonville, FL. She begins at UNF on August 1, 2008.
