Carolina welcomes nearly 7,000 new students

The 4,081 first-year students expected to start classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next week were chosen from 31,955 applicants. An additional 749 students are joining the Carolina community as transfer students.

“We’re glad and grateful these students chose Carolina,” said Stephen Farmer, vice provost for enrollment and undergraduate admissions. “We’re amazed at all they’ve achieved both in and out of the classroom, and we’re heartened by their willingness to work with others to make a difference in the world. We’re confident they have what they need – the intellect, talent, work ethic, and diversity of experience and perspective – to make each other better and to help the University achieve its mission as a global public research university.”

The Graduate School expects to enroll about 1,800 new students. These students were chosen from 13,607 graduate school applications.

“Carolina’s newest graduate students join a strong, collaborative community that is dedicated to helping them become leaders in their fields,” said Steve Matson, dean of The Graduate School. “While pursuing their degrees, graduate students work side-by-side with their faculty mentors to create discoveries that help people and communities in North Carolina and beyond. They lead outreach efforts in local communities and are excellent role models for undergraduates. We value graduate students’ ideas and their enthusiasm for creating valuable new knowledge.”

Undergraduate and graduate students entering this fall include veterans, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, and writers, as well as champion student-athletes and community activists.
