Day in the life: Duo in Dental Hygiene

Carolina senior twins share similar passions and do most things together, including going through the dental hygiene program.

Being a twin has its challenges, said Kayce Scinta, a UNC-Chapel Hill senior and twin sister to Kayla Scinta.

“You’re always being compared to someone,” Kayce said.

In the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry’s Dental Hygiene Program, in which both twins are enrolled, that lifelong feeling of competition and pressure has subsided.

“You can’t compare yourself to anyone in the program,” Kayla said. “Everyone learns at different speeds.”

Life as a twin does have its benefits, including similar passions and camaraderie. Kayce and Kayla do most things together: live in the same apartment, attend the same classes, cheer on the Tar Heels and travel abroad. Studying together in high school is what paved their way to college.

A devout love of dental visits as children is what shaped their path toward the dental field.

“We’ve never had a cavity,” Kayla said.

Being proudly stationed at “the most beautiful dental school in the entire world” helps Kayce and Kayla keep things in perspective through long, exhausting days of clinic and class.
