Global Rankings place UNC 46th among top world universities
Carolina tied for 11th among U.S. public universities on the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Recognized once again as one of the leading global public research universities, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tied for 46th among the top universities in the world, up one spot from last year. It was tied for 11th, both ties with the University of Minnesota, among U.S. public universities on the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The 2014-2015 ranking, released Oct. 1, is based on 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities. Those indicators cover teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
“A great university must be a global university, and this ranking is another indication of Carolina’s international excellence,” said Chancellor Carol L. Folt. “As a leading global public research university, Carolina inspires research, creates international citizens, influences teaching and learning and makes an impact around the world. To be recognized once again by the Times Higher Education magazine for that work is an honor.”
The California Institute of Technology tops the magazine’s list, followed by Harvard University, the University of Oxford, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge.
In the rankings by subject area, UNC placed 35th worldwide and 17th in the U.S. in arts and humanities; 21st worldwide and 12th in the U.S. in health affairs; 28th worldwide and 18th in the U.S. in social sciences; and 42nd worldwide and 21st in the U.S. in life sciences.
In recent rankings done by other publications, Carolina was rated fifth among the nation’s best public universities by U.S. News & World Report , and an article in the The New York Times called Carolina third among the most economically diverse colleges, behind Vassar and Grinnell, and first among public universities.
