Meet a Tar Heel: Balancing braids and books

UNC-Chapel Hill graduate student Sasha Coefield attempted her first braid at age five.  By middle school she was mimicking hairstyles she saw in magazines and books, quickly becoming the self-taught braid expert she is today. She now runs the YouTube channel Asksash88, which showcases her hair, fashion and beauty video tutorials and has more than 47 million views.

Coefield uploaded her first video to YouTube five years ago as a first year student at Carolina.  Today that video has 16 million views — and counting.  Additionally, Coefield published her first book, DIY Braids, in 2013.

With ambitions to become a dietitian when Coefield graduates from the School of Public Health this August, she hopes to expand Asksash88 by bringing her nutrition expertise to her viewers.
