NYT rating highlights Carolina’s economic diversity
UNC-Chapel Hill was No. 1 among public universities and No. 3 overall behind Vassar and Grinnell.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was recently named among the top three most economically diverse colleges, further highlighting Carolina’s commitment to providing an accessible education.
To measure top colleges’ efforts on economic diversity, The Upshot column in The New York Times calculated a College Access Index based on the share of freshmen in recent years who received a Pell grant, as well as the net price of attendance for low- and middle-income families.

Perhaps fittingly, the ranking comes during the 10th anniversary year of the Carolina Covenant – a financial aid program at UNC-Chapel Hill that focuses on low-income families and allows eligible students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.
Carolina also recently was rated fifth among the nation’s best public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
