Senior prom – with a twist

It was an energetic night for seniors - senior citizens that is - who danced to everything from big band music to rock and roll hits.

Twenty Carolina graduate and professional students from across disciplines united recently for a special event: a senior citizen prom.

Designed and orchestrated by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Graduate and Professional Student Federation (GPSF), the senior citizen prom took place at Orange County’s Seymour Center. The event was the brainchild of GPSF Chief of Staff Anginelle Alabanza.

Alabanza is a third-year graduate student in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. She took a break from molecular systems and nanomaterials to organize an energetic night for the senior citizens, who danced to everything from big band music to rock and roll hits.

“This is a really good example of showing the community that we are excited to give back to our senior citizens and bridge that generation gap that has happened with seniors moving into nursing homes or away from their families,” Alabanza said.

The GPSF is a representative advocacy organization that serves as a connector within the graduate and professional student community.
