Founded 100 years ago on Wednesday, January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women.
Continuing through the years, it is the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship amongst college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.
Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, nine exceptionally talented and gifted honor students came together in Miner Hall on the campus of Howard University with a vision to form Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Seven extraordinary honor students from the class of 1910 who showed interest in the sorority were extended an invitation into the sorority without initiation on February 11, 1909 to ensure the continuity of the organization.
Under the leadership of Nellie Quander (elected president in 1911), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority took the first step in establishing a national body in perpetuity when it became legally incorporated on January 29, 1913.
