University plays a key role in campus self-segregation
September 10, 2003

TO THE EDITOR:

Nathan Denny's column makes a good point about the tendency of individuals to self-segregate, but he makes two critical flaws.

First of all, what about campus groups who are responsible for this kind of segregation?

What about the black cultural center or the LGBTQ? Would the University even think about sponsoring a white cultural center or a straight cultural center?

The University is simultaneously promoting diversity and sponsoring segregationist groups such as these that cut and divide the University along certain social or demographic lines.

Secondly, diversity in ideas is not necessarily tied into race or sexuality, as Denny seems unwilling to admit. Ideological diversity spawns "the marketplace of ideas."

But when the overwhelming majority of UNC faculty are Democrats and/or liberals, what kind of diversity is that?

Affirmative action uses race to sponsor diversity, but ideas are not tied to race, they are tied to individuals, regardless of color.

The solution is to stop sponsoring segregationist groups and to make sure all points of view and all individuals are treated equally.

Creating special black-only or gay-only groups and hiring mostly left-wing professors will not accomplish this goal.
