Goals: Stereotypes
of black women in the media
November 5, 2003
Thank You to all who came out to the meeting on Wednesday and contributed to the discussion/debate about Black Women and their portrayal in the media. At the end of every BSM meeting, members come up with a plan of action. Yesterday we discussed how we often come up with a plan of action but those goals are forgotten after we Harambee and leave Upendo. Part of our plans yesterday were to raise awareness about the portrayal of black women and how it is harmful to ourselves and to children. Remember to try to pay attention to what young children are influenced by and the representations that they began to mimic. Women, if we want to change how we are portrayed and viewed by society, we should look at the image we ourselves reflect. Our goal is to be conscious of how we represent ourself and be tasteful when we go out. From now on, as members of the BSM we should try to leave the meetings with a new insight and if our goals include change that is what we should do. What we learn at meetings should be reflected in our life and like a member said yesterday, "Knowledge is power, but what is more important is the application of knowledge"!
