CABJ EVENT CALENDAR 2006-07

Aug. 20 The Carolina Association of Black Journalists kicked off the 2006-2007 school year at Fall Fest, our university’s annual alcohol-free festival that occurs the weekend before school starts to welcome students to UNC, and provides an opportunity for students to learn more about UNC student organizations, service organizations and university departments at information booths. CABJ members were enthused to answer questions about our organization. We also registered new and renewing members and collected contact information from students who expressed an interest in joining.

Sept. 13 The first general body meeting of the year. CABJ members who attended the 2006 NABJ Convention in Indianapolis summarized their at the convention for the other members. President, Amanda Rodrigues Smith, presented details about three grants that CABJ would receive, encouraged members to sign up to attend the Board of Visitor's barbecue the following weekend and announced the theme for 2006-2007, “Year of Recruitment.”

Sept. 22 Seven CABJ officers and three members attended an evening barbeque for the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Board of Visitors. It gave them the opportunity to network with members of the board who worked for nationally recognized newspaper, broadcast, advertising, and public relations companies.

Oct. 2 As a part of Race Relations Week at UNC, CABJ co-sponsored a forum entitled “The Color of Media Coverage” with SARR (Students for the Advancement of Race Relations). Attendants viewed the short documentary, “Jacob,” written and directed by 2002 UNC graduate Philip Busier. “Jacob” explored the lack of media coverage of missing and exploited children of color, a concept often ignored in mainstream media discussions. The panel, which followed the documentary, included local anchors Bill Gaines (formerly of WNCN NBC17) and Anthony Wilson (of WTVD ABC11) and UNC professors Napoleon Byars and Harry Amana.

Oct. 11 CABJ executive board members spent the afternoon publicizing the organization and informed potential members of the upcoming general body meeting in front of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Benji Cauthren, development and alumni affairs coordinator, came and spoke at this meeting about the journalism alumni directory and the alumni career mentor program.

Oct. 19-20 Several members carpooled to Howard University in Washington, D.C. to attend an annual communications job fair over UNC’s Fall Break. There, they spoke with representatives from various news organizations and gathered advice from veterans of the field.

Nov. 10 Members joined in front of the Student Union for a social activity. They enjoyed dinner together after attending the “Feast before the Fight”, an annual Homecoming fair featuring live entertainment, free food and carnival games.

Dec. 6 CABJ members met at Mama Dip’s, a well-known soul food restaurant in Chapel Hill, for a study break, good food and inspiring conversation with Chuck Stone.

Feb. 21 General body meeting. News anchor Anthony Wilson of ABC 11, who co-anchors the weekend morning newscasts, spoke with members immediately following the general body meeting about his journey in journalism and experiences as a black professional in the media. Wilson also offered advice to students about the importance of internships and proper etiquette when meeting with potential employers.
