| There are three campus-wide email lists and one department-specific
email list at UNC having to do with medieval studies. Each
list has a different purpose and target audience, so this
arrangement is not redundant and cross-posting is not necessary.
It is very important that you be on the list or lists that
best suit your interests and your role in medieval studies
at UNC; otherwise, you may not receive the kinds of information
you wish to have.
To subscribe to any of these lists, please go to
the UNC-CH Mailing Lists page and follow
the
instructions.
If you need to learn more about these lists before subscribing,
continue reading. The following set of definitions, which
has been approved by all of the list administrators, describes
each list, its purpose, and its subscriber profile. These
descriptions also provide information about how to post
messages to the lists and read messages from their archives.
1. medvlch: List
type: unrestricted (anyone may subscribe instantly).
Purpose: to publish
announcements about medieval-related events at UNC and in
the surrounding area, as well as calls for conference papers
and other general information of use to those who study
and teach the Middle Ages. Volume:
low (currently averaging under one posting per day). Subscriber
profile: Everyone affiliated with UNC who
researches the Middle Ages, teaches courses that include
significant medieval content, or has a personal interest
in the study of the Middle Ages should be subscribed to
this list. If you teach courses having significant medieval
content, even if you are not primarily a medievalist yourself,
you should have access to this information so that you can
at least pass it along to interested students. To
post a message (list
subscribers only): email your message to the
address medvlch@listserv.unc.edu,
or send it through the World Wide Web by following the instructions
on the
medvlch Lyris list page. To
view archived messages: enter the
medvlch Lyris list archives and select the option "Read
messages."
2. cams:
List type: unrestricted
(anyone may subscribe instantly). Purpose:
this is the organizational email list of CAMS, so it is
used primarily for information and announcements having
to do with CAMS as a functioning organization. Volume:
low (currently averaging under one posting per day). Subscriber
profile: Anyone who wishes to take part in
the business or leadership of CAMS, or simply to remain
informed of the organization's workings, should be subscribed
to this list. In a sense, all medievalists at UNC are
already part of CAMS, because the group's mission is to
serve that community as inclusively as possible; but it
is understood that not everyone may wish to have direct
involvement in the organization's workings. For this reason,
the list cams
will probably be a subset of the list medvlch.
To post a message (list subscribers
only): email your message to the address cams@listserv.unc.edu,
or send it through the World Wide Web by following the instructions
on the
cams Lyris list page. To view
archived messages: enter
the cams Lyris list archives and select the option "Read
messages."
3. medgrad:
List type: restricted
(subscription requests are screened by the list administrator;
all graduate student medievalists at UNC are eligible).
Purpose: to provide
a forum for confidential procedures, such as elections of
the graduate student representatives to the Medieval Studies
Committee, and for any other discussion among graduate students
that may seem inappropriate for posting to medvlch
or cams.
Volume: very low. Currently,
messages are rarely posted to medgrad except in relation
to the annual election of a graduate student representative.
Subscriber profile:
This list is restricted to graduate student medievalists
at UNC; all who fit this category should be subscribed.
It is very important that graduate student medievalists
be subscribed to medgrad,
because only through this list do you have a voice in electing
representatives to the Medieval Studies Committee. Like
cams,
the list medgrad
should be a subset of medvlch.
To post a message (list subscribers
only): email your message to the address medgrad@listserv.unc.edu,
or send it through the World Wide Web by following the instructions
on the
medgrad Lyris list page. Archived
messages: because some of medgrad's proceedings
(such as elections) may be confidential, this list's archives
are not available to subscribers or non-subscribers.
4. medcomps: List type:
unrestricted (anyone may subscribe instantly). Purpose:
to provide a forum for the discussion of news and information
relating to the medieval section of the the English M. A.
Comprehensive Exam. Volume:
low. Subscriber profile:
Anyone studying for the exam and any medievalist who
has passed it and is willing to offer advice should be subscribed.
To post a message (list subscribers
only): email your message to the address medcomps@listserv.unc.edu,
or send it through the World Wide Web by following the instructions
on the
medcomps Lyris list page. To
view archived messages: enter the
medcomps Lyris list archives and select the option "Read
messages."
