Dialectic Hall University of North Carolina

                                                                                    May 21, 1860

Dear Sir:

You are doubtless aware that the rapid increase for the last few years of this Institution has led to the necessity of constructing new Halls for the two rival sister societies. These have been completed and the members of the Dialectic Society are contemplating their removal from the old Hall. The funds of the Society are utterly insufficient to furnish the hall properly and to make such accessions to the Library as are necessary; consequently (as the objects proposed concern equally the absent and present members,) we, in behalf of our Society, have been directed to appeal to you for aid. It would be presumptuous in us to urge considerations upon you who know so well the noble purpose for which assistance is asked, and who can appreciate and sympathize with our youthful efforts.

Should this meet your approbation, we would respectfully request an answer before the beginning of next Session.

To prevent mistakes all communications should be directed to “Dialectic Society, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.”

We have the honor to be your obedient servants,
