When THE PROMETHEAN began in Spring 2000, its sole focus was on publishing a quarterly magazine, BUT the group has evolved into a active literary society. THE PROMETHEAN still encourages young writers and artists of UNC-CH to publish their work, but has begun pursue its own goals, including activities such as:

· leadership and artistic development within our group
· cultural and artistic activities

o weekly poetry nights
o e.g. film nights (especially foreign film, socially relevant cinema, and artistic experimentation)

o writing workshops, book & poetry reading clubs, public poetry readings, debate, etc.

o all events open to all students.
· working with literacy activists

The Promethean is currently run by a president and treasurer, but member committees may be formed for activities. The organization realizes it is in the beginning stages, and is always open to the creation of new positions or adjustments in group leadership. The role of the FACULTY ADVISOR is an as-needed one, for it is important that The Promethean remain led by students. However, the ADVISOR should be an approachable and experienced faculty member who can provide helpful feedback and constructive criticism.

The Promethean began in the Spring of 2000, in accordance with the dream of reverdie (rejuvenation and rebirth) in this generation. Students must only express interest in participating in The Promethean to become members, and MEMBERSHIP is open to all UNC-CH undergraduate students, without regard to race, sex, national origin, religion, handicap, sexual orientation, age, or veteran status. Furthermore, it is the organizations' desire to include a broad DIVERSITY of cultural and racial participation.

OUR MISSION IS:

1. To UNITE young writers and artist.  The Promethean encourages young writers and artists in their creative endeavors by bringing them together in mutually beneficial, supportive, and analytical interaction.

2. To ENCOURAGE readers to contemplate. The Promethean seeks to actively emphasize the extreme importance of literature, both traditional and modern. In the face of a growing apathy towards aesthetic reading and writing, this organization is resolute in its goal of calling attention to the value of reading and writing among the student body.

3. To FOSTER a literary community and
INSPIRE a new cultural renaissance. Through achieving its goals among the writers and readers, The Promethean dreams of mobilizing a new movement of aesthetic appreciation and activity. Nevertheless, this organization is entirely aware of the hard work that such stately aspirations entail, and is wholly dedicated to this labor. Where other student literary organizations have been passive in their promotion, The Promethean, continually maintaining its idealism, will  remain dedicated to its high esteem of literature and aesthetic value.
