PRESS RELEASE
RE: Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Presents the Theta Woman Scholarship
Chapel Hill, NC
February 7, 2000
The Alpha Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. recently presented its first ever Theta Woman Scholarship in recognition of an outstanding UNC-CH female. The $300 scholarship is designed to recognize a UNC-CH woman who exemplifies the five tenets of the Sorority in her daily life as a student. These tenets are Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Multiculturalism and Sisterhood.
This year’s recipient of the award is Emily Williams, a freshman from Spokane, WA.
Williams was valedictorian of her high school class and received the Washington Scholars Award, which is full-tuition at any Washington state university. Speaking about her decision to attend UNC-CH, Williams said, "I passed up a full-tuition scholarship to any Washington state school to be here, so I think that certainly speaks well for UNC-CH." She continues to excel academically, and obtained a 4.0 GPA for the Fall 1999 term.
Williams has constantly been involved in leadership and service opportunities. She was a Hugh O’Brian Leadership conference ambassador, junior counselor, and seminar chair assistant. She has also done various volunteer projects such as being a mentor to grade school students and distributing food at a homeless shelter in her hometown.
As well as being interested in multicultural issues on campus, Williams also comes from a very diverse family. She explained her family background by saying, "My dad was born and raised in Washington state. He traveled to Taiwan where he met my mother while teaching English at a language school in Taipei. My mother worked at the school. They were married in Taiwan, and then decided to live in the US. I am half Chinese."
Sisterhood remains a crucial part of Williams’ life. She has two sisters. Grace, her older sister and a junior at NYU, recommended UNC-CH to Williams in the first place. Maya, Emily’s younger sister, attends West Valley High School in Spokane, WA. Williams said she didn’t realize just how much she valued sisterhood until she came to a college across the country from her family. She said the bonds they have will continue to be strengthened even though they are far away. She said she realizes that now more than ever she needs their love, advice and support.
The Alpha Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. is proud to announce that it will be presenting the Theta Woman Scholarship on Friday, February 11th, 2000 at 12:15 p.m. in the Pit on the campus of UNC-CH.
