Book and lyrics by Ryan Cunningham and music by Joshua Salzman
Very loosely based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, "I Love You Because" is the story of how the methodical greeting card poet Austin and love-for-the-moment Marcy try against all odds not to fall in love with each other. She's on the rebound and has decided not to consider any date as relationship material for at least six months. He's heartbroken after catching his girlfriend cheating and is determined to write the perfect love poem to win her back. Meanwhile, Austin's malapropping brother Jeff has been "wearing out the mattress" with Marcy's brainy, emotionally aloof friend Diana, while remaining "just friends." Filling out the company, is NYC Man and NYC Woman, who serve as part-time narrators and full-time instigators. Together, the characters explore the rules and nuances of dating in the city as they learn how to love.
