Volunteer Opportunities
The Phi Beta Kappa Service Committee is recruiting dedicated chapter members to work with the executive board in implementing various functions and events throughout the school year. So far, we have a guest lecture and a social event planned. Please contact our chapter secretary Meaghan Jennison (jennison@email.unc.edu), if you are interested.
More about our guest lecturer: Dr.Eric Adelberger, Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Washington. Dr. Adelberger will be
visiting UNC this fall. We want to make his visit to our campus as successful and beneficial as possible. There will be many opportunities for Phi Beta Kappa members, especially those involved in planning his visit, to interact with Dr. Adelberger and discuss his
innovative research in cutting edge physics. This is a great opportunity to discuss your hopes, concerns, or fears for CERN's Large Hadron Collider.
Scientifica has teamed up with UNC and Duke to create a science and math mentorship program for students in Durham Public Schools. Undergraduates from both universities pair up with selected high school students from Durham. The goal of this program is to promote and facilitate high school students' participation in science and math, particularly scientific research. A sample Scientifica program is available here. If you are interested in mentoring Durham high school students, contact Michael Braly (mbraly@unc.edu), Eric Butter (egbutter@email.unc.edu), or Anu Sud (anuasud@yahoo.com). This is a volunteer position without any course credit. Download and complete the Scientifica portfolio and criminal background check form and return them to Michael.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools are recruiting volunteers

The Orange County Literacy Council is seeking volunteers for tutoring,
and to support Council activities (office work, community outreach,
fundraising, publicity, special events, newsletter, etc.). Volunteer
placements are designed on volunteer schedules, interests, and skills.
If you are interested, you are invited to attend a Tutor Training Workshop.
Before attending the workshop, prospective tutors should participate
in an orientation session. The orientation will include the mission
and programs of the Literacy Council, the commitment involved in becoming
a tutor, the sequence of training, and other relevant information.
At the close of the orientation, we will ask all participants who
are interested in becoming tutors to enroll in the training workshop
by paying a $15 registration fee to cover materials and refreshments.
Please let us know if this poses a financial hardship. Call 933-2151
or 732-0868 if you have any questions about the orientation or training.
