WHAT IS THE TAR HEEL SQUASH SYSTEM OF PLAY?

UNC

     1.  Goals. The goal of the Club is to foster the growth of squash in the Chapel Hill area, by making instruction in the game and the use of UNC's facilities available to all who are interested.
     2.  Membership.  Tar Heel Squash is open to students, faculty, staff and townsfolk.  Dues are $20 per semester for undergraduates/graduate students and $40 per semester for all others.  Email us to find out how to join.  The fees pay for an official Tar Heel Squash t-shirt, squash ball, access to division play, instruction, equipment use, travel and other costs associated with the program.
     3.  The Program.
Instruction.

          (a) All players are welcome to attend the four group lessons in the fundamentals of the game given during the first three weeks of the semester at staggered times so that all can find a convenient time to attend each lesson.  Please see the schedule.

          (b) All players are furthermore welcome to attend the three clinics on more advanced topics given during the next three weeks of the semester at times that are convenient.

          (c) Any member may arrange with Ed Durand for a private lesson at a modest additional cost.

Play.

Play this year will follow that of graduated ladder play culminating in a squash ladder in the spring. Further details about our system of play are below.

Squash Ladder

Beginning of year to fall break:

Groups will be assigned randomly. You may play anyone within that group as many times as you can. Everyone will begin at 0 points and will gain/lose points as follows:

Match +10

Win      +20

Loss     -5

These groups will continue until fall break

Fall Break to end of semester:

New groups will be assigned based upon first group scores. Low point totals will be with others of similar points. Everyone will begin with score from first grouping and will gain/lose points as follows:

Match +10

Win      +20

Loss     -5

Spring semester to end of school year:

A standard ladder will be developed based upon point totals from the fall semester. All players will be able to play anyone within 5 above or below their ladder standing. Ladders will be changed every weekend based upon the week’s activities. Points are assigned as follows:

Match +20

Win over a higher seeded player +50

Win over a lower seeded player +25

Loss to higher seed -15

Loss to lower seed -25

Failure to play any matches within a 2 week period -75

In order to obtain a more accurate standing within the undergraduate players (for meets and matches) undergraduates will be able to play amongst each other for direct positional replacement on the squash ladder in the spring semester.

Posting results:

I hope to have the website ready by the September 7 meeting. It will contain everyone’s contact e-mail address, and group/ladder standing. The group/ladder information will be posted next to the courts and updated every weekend.

There will be two options regarding the recording of results. It is the winning player’s responsibility to let me know the winner and loser of the match. (Scores are not necessary). They may do this either by writing results on the squash ladder by the court OR by sending me an e-mail
