Membership Recruitment Social/Intern Program

SPJ provided pizza and refreshments, showed video, gave overview of SPJ. 20 students came and expressed interest in joining SPJ. After the overview, several journalism students spoke about past internship experiences and offered tips.

Covering Kosovo
Seremb "Sam" Gjergjaj - visiting Journalism scholar from Kosovo

During the war in Kosovo, Gjergjaj became one of the editors of the first military magazine. When NATO attacked Yugoslavia, he started working as an international radio and television journalist. He talked about his experiences as a producer and reporter for RTK covering the war in Kosovo and answered questions.

Resume Workshop
September 27, 2000
Linda Williams, metro editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, offered tips on how to write a good resume, showed examples of bad resumes and told what se was looking for whne making hiring decisions.

Professional Development
October 2, 2000
Frank Denton, editor of The Wisconsin State Journal, met with SPJ's officers and talked about the importance of local news coverage. Denton wrote a chapter on the subject in the American Society of Newspaper Editor's "The Local News Handbook."

Project Watchdog
October 18, 2000
UNC Athletics director Dick Baddour and Durham Herald-Sun sports media columnist J. Shawn Durham addressed the topic of "sports media criticism." Durham spoke of the role he played as a member of the media criticizing the media. Baddour talked about his role as AD and how the media incorrectly reported that UNC football coach Carl Torbush would be fired last year and that Roy Williams would be named the new men's basketball coach last summer.

Rodrigo Cervantes

Rodrigo Cervantes from the Mexico City campus of Monterrey Tech University spoke with students about his experiences as a journalist in Mexico.
