Events Planning Committee: This
committee is responsible for planning and executing all of SUDAN’s
events held on campus. Past events have included benefit performances,
teach-ins, guest speakers, film showings, and weekly vigils, as well
as nation-wide events proposed by STAND such as the Darfur Fast and
the National Call-In Day. Leadership opportunities are open for those
interested in the areas of campus outreach and publicity. Events Planning
is always looking for enthusiastic people with new and creative ideas
for events on campus that would broaden the awareness of the genocide
in Darfur, and provide students with the opportunity to influence
the efforts of our government and the global community.
Meetings: Monday, 8:30, First Floor Murphy
Community Outreach Committee:
This committee focuses on establishing and maintaining contacts with
community groups, particularly religious and civic organizations.
We cooperate with the Events Planning Committee to host speakers and
events as well as encouraging community groups to plan their own events.
Our goal is to raise awareness of the situation in Darfur and encourage
activism off the UNC campus. There are many opportunities for leadership
in this community and is always looking for innovative ideas.
Meetings: Monday, 8:30, First Floor Murphy
K-12 Outreach Committee: K-12
Outreach is an educational outreach committee directed towards spreading
awareness in NC schools. Our primary goal is to spread awareness about
the situation in Darfur and information about our organization to
area middle and high schools. We give interactive presentations with
the goal of empowering young people to act to fight genocide.
Meetings: Thursday, 7:00, First Floor Murphy
Divestment Committee: This
is a small committee that looks at working primarily at the University
level, but also with NC State and other Universities around North
Carolina, in order to divest from the Sudanese central government.
Money flowing into the Sudanese government, especially from oil, plays
a big part in funding groups like the Janjaweed and ultimately perpetuates
the genocide in Darfur. Divestment was shown to work in South Africa,
and Sudan has a history of being susceptible to economic pressure.
We are hoping that by using a method of Target Divestment, which makes
great effort to distinguish offending companies in Sudan from those
who are neutral or beneficial to the civilian population, we hope
to target another side to the genocide in Darfur in order to help
bring it to a halt.
