FAQs
Just how competitive is
Club Swimming?
Club Swimming is as competitive as you want to make it. All practices
are optional (but recommended!). We also put the lanes on different
intervals so that everyone can get the workout they need. The typical
club swimmer is one who has swum year round, high school, and/or summer
league in the past.
Do we have
try-outs?
No, we do not have tryouts! UNC Swim Club welcomes swimmers of all
levels. All students, graduate and undergraduate alike are welcome to
swim with us.
How are the
practices?
Practices generally run an hour and a half. We swim about 4,000 yards
each practice. Intensity increases as the year progresses.
How often do we
practice and where?
We practice in the Bowman Gray Pool. We have 6 practices a week.
We practice 5 days a week in the water and workout one day a week doing
weights and a class in the SRC. See Practice Schedule. We practice in
the Bowman Gray
Pool.
Does the club
provide equipment?
Pull-buoys and kick boards are provided. Swimmers must provide their
own suit, cap, and goggles. We have a team suit and cap, as well as
t-shirt available to purchase!
Do we go to
meets?
Yes! The Swim Club goes to about 2 or 3 meets a semester. We compete
against the club teams of other colleges. The Club Swim Team pays for
hotels when we travel and we either carpool or take a van to the meets.
All meets are optional and swimmers choose the events they want to
swim. Click here for a typical list of
events.
Do I have to pay
dues or fill out any forms?
Club dues are $20 per semester. In order to swim, one also has to fill
out a Release and Indemnity Agreement, available the
first week of practice, in the sports club office, or online. If one
plans to drive to a meet during the year, they must fill out a travel
insurance form.
Do I have to
sign up at a certain time?
There is no set time to sign up or to try out. It’s never too late to
join club swimming! You can come out and join us at any time.
Do we do any
social activities?
Absolutely! We have monthly team dinners when we head up to Franklin
Street to eat after a Friday practice. We also go to movies, the
occasional clubbin’ outing, and parties. All social activities are
optional but always enjoyable!
Do we
participate in community service or fundraising?
The Swim Club actively participates in the annual Blood Platelet Drive
sponsored by the Sports Club Council. We also participate in
fundraising events such as the Annual Sports Clubs Cardboard Boat Race,
distributing tickets and ushering at basketball games, and other
fundraisers around campus.
