Ranking
third in NIH funding among dental schools, the UNC-Chapel
Hill School
of Dentistry has consistently used cutting-edge
research and technology to support its teaching, service,
patient care and research mission for the people of
North Carolina during the past 50 years.
The
state's only dental school provides training for 300
DDS students, 70 dental hygiene, and 21 dental assistants.
Its comprehensive advanced education program offers
degrees or certificates in 13 areas. Students hone skills
in a state of the art simulation lab and new clinic
facility. They also gain a diverse learning experience
outside the classroom as they participate in rotations
while treating the under-served and medically compromised
in North Carolina. The 91 instate rotation sites include
county health departments, correctional institutions,
community Hospitals, Veterans Administration Medical
Centers, military facilities and Indian Health Services.
The
school's faculty serves as an important resource to
insure continuing competency of practitioners and quality
care for its patients through its continuing education
programs. The continuing education program offers more
courses and serves more professionals than any program
in North American. Faculty members also travel the entire
state of North Carolina to educate practitioners through
Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).
