House
Undergraduate Library will be under renovation through
2002. The new plan accommodates an increased emphasis
on group study and team projects as well as the need
for quiet study space, the addition of interactive computer
classrooms, more computers, and the flexibility to incorporate
evolving technologies into library services. A media
center and a large computer lab will be in the basement.
When
it opened in 1968 the library was a state-of-the-art
library for the print age with collections, services,
and spaces designed for the way undergraduates used
the library in that era. Today, the library is outdated.
The need for technological improvements, increased comfort,
and improved study spaces is critical. The renovation
will:
- provide a safe and comfortable 24-hour academic
support center for study, research, and computing;
- offer a variety of classes and workshops relating
to research methods, electronic information, and the
Internet;
- provide space and opportunity for faculty and students
to collaborate on new techniques for teaching and
learning;
- house ATN user services in one convenient location;
- serve as a state and national model for delivering
information services to 21st century students and
help sustain our status as the best academic library
in the Southeast.
The library is named for Robert B. House, dean of administration
and chancellor of the university from 1934 to 1945 and
chancellor from 1945 to 1957.
