The
mission of the School
of Medicine has always been to serve the people
of North Carolina. Our physicians diagnose and treat
patients from all 100 counties in our state. More doctors
who practice in North Carolina earned their degree here
than at any other medical school.
We
train the next generation of doctors through our MD
program. We also offer a basic science graduate program,
degrees in allied health services, post-doctoral education
and residency training programs.
The
School of Medicine consistently ranks among the nation's
top ten medical schools for primary care by U.S. News
& World Report. It ranks 14th among the nation's 125
medical schools in research funding from the National
Institutes of Health. Its faculty members are widely
regarded as international leaders in clinical specialties
such as cancer, hemophilia, burns, gastrointestinal
disorders and transplants. And, we have nationally recognized
centers in alcoholism, aging, arthritis, birth defects,
cancer, cardiovascular disease, cystic fibrosis, gastrointestinal
disease, gene therapy, infectious disease, nephrology,
neurosciences, thrombosis and hemostasis.
The
School of Medicine is part of a campuswide initiative
to the emerging field of genome
sciences. The collaborative effort will make UNC-Chapel
Hill a driving force in determining how the genomics
revolution will change the way we treat human diseases,
design drugs and grow crops.
