One
of the most modern campus stores in the United States,
this $1.5 million contemporary structure provides textbooks,
fiction and nonfiction books, computers and software,
and many other items for the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
Texts
are sold on the second floor, while on the first floor,
the Bull's
Head Bookshop contains more than 22,000 titles for
academic and pleasure reading. Sharing the first floor
is a large shop for school supplies and personal items,
clothing, and university memorabilia.
The
store also sells caps, gowns and academic regalia for
ceremonies such as commencement. The
Daily Grind is a popular stop for refreshments,
and includes a place to relax between classes. The store
contributes all income above operating expenses to student
scholarships. Student
Stores has contributed millions of dollars to the
scholarship program of the University, funding in the
past ten years alone nearly nine million dollars in
non-athletic scholarships. Student Stores is self-supporting
and receives no state funding.
The
building memorializes Josephus Daniels, secretary of
the navy in Woodrow Wilson's cabinet, publisher of the
Raleigh News and Observer, and a longtime University
trustee. It was completed in 1968 and renovated in 1989.
