Where did m.unc.edu come from? |
The m.unc.edu site for mobile devices is based off of code that was developed at MIT. The fine folks there released the code as what is called open source, whereby others are free to use and modify the code as needed. Led by Brian Payst, Director of IT for the Division of Student Affairs, a small team here at UNC Chapel Hill installed and configured this code to meet the needs of the Carolina community. We hope this is just the beginning and want to see more things become mobile here at Carolina. If you have content that you would like to make mobile or want to learn more, please contact us via the Contact Us tab at the top of the page. |

Yes, use of Guardian and Blackboard Alerts are free to anyone with an ONYEN. There is no charge to receive text message alerts beyond whatever your carrier charges for text messaging. The mobile site at m.unc.edu is free as well, although you are responsible for any charges you may incur from your phone carrier for mobile Internet access. |
Will I get unwanted text messages? |
No. You have complete control over what services you get text messages from via the "Alerts" tab on your profile and you can choose to receive notifications via e-mail instead (or not at all). There is no advertising in UNC Mobile and there never will be. |
Do I need a data plan to use Guardian? |
No. Although we did offer a version of Guardian last year that required a data plan, this new version does not. You activate and manage Guardian by simply calling a phone number. You can program this number into the speed dial on your phone for fast access. |
Why don't all phones give location data to Guardian? |
Phones and phone carriers vary widely in their ability to provide location services. Guardian will use global positioning (GPS) if your phone and carrier support them and will fall back to cell phone triangulation if GPS is not available. Not all phone carriers have the capability to let Guardian see their location data. Currently, only Sprint provides this service. We expect AT&T and Verizon to allow this in the near future. To help campus police locate you in the event that a Guardian alert is triggered, you can leave a voice message when you set the timer. Good things to include in this message are: what you are wearing, where you are leaving from, where you are headed, and the route you plan to take. |

I can't log in with my ONYEN |
We use the UNC campus directory to validate your ONYEN and ONYEN password. If you have hidden your information from being displayed in the directory you will not be able to create an account. If you change your directory settings to allow your name to be seen you will be able to log in. You do not have to show anything other than your name. |
