ViDe
Quick Start - Directory Enabled

If you are not in a rush, and you wish to have others be capable of locating you in the ViDeNet Dialing Directory, then this page is for you. Please follow the steps below to place yourself in the directory and request an account:

1. Create a directory entry. This registers your basic information, such as name, address and email with the ViDeNet system. You will get a user name and password to use with all further ViDeNet activity. Once you have a directory entry, you can establish as many video conferencing accounts as you want and they will all show up under your name. Don't create more than one directory entry for yourself. Your single directory entry will list all of your endpoints as explained in step 2 below.

2. Get an account for your endpoint. (Must have completed step 1 above) This allows you to register your video conferencing endpoint with a particular gatekeeper so that it can use services.

  • Choose 'Zone Participation' and then 'Request or Customize and Account.'
  • Choose 'Ohio State University - Free Love Gatekeeper' as your zone.
  • The default name for your H323 ID (which is placed in your endpoint along with your number and the IP address of the gatekeeper) will be your first and last name, with a period between. Subsequent requests will be appended with '.1', '.2', etc. Sally Mander's first request for an account would be listed as 'Sally.Mander' in the directory. Her second request would be listed as 'Sally.Mander.1', etc. This is different from her 'Endpoint/Conference ID' label. The Endpoint/Conference ID label is a friendly name which the user gives to her/his endpoint. It may be edited at any time (unlike the H323 ID). The Endpoint/Conference ID label will soon be searchable, and it is recommended that this is the best place for descriptive names for endpoints (Conference Room 5, My ViewStation, etc.). If there is some special reason that you wish to make your H323 ID different from the default of First.Last, please list the H323 ID you wish to have assigned when requesting and endpoint. If it is unique, we will format it with periods between words and assign it.
  • Click on 'Request.'
  • After an endpoint has been assigned, you may return to the Zone Information link, to give your endpoint a friendly name in the directory, such as 'Home Desktop Video.'

3. Personalize your zone. This sets a cookie on your browser that ensures the 'My ViDeNet' information you see is specific to you, and not another site. It is like personalizing a web-based news site. You will need to do this on any new computer you use to view 'My ViDeNet.' This requires that your browser accept cookies.

4. Configure your endpoint. You must ensure 3 pieces of information are in your endpoint for it to work properly.

Happy video conferencing !
