China on My Mind

China has been a focus for a number of World View programs in 2006. We produced a seminar on East Asia, took a group of 43 educators to China to study its education and culture, and hosted a China trip follow-up workshop. These have been enriching experiences, and we would like to share some of the resources we prepared for these programs.

Hsi-chu Bolick, East Asian Bibliographer, and Lisa Norberg, Coordinator of Instructional Services, both at the UNC University Library, put together a website with English-language resources on China. We have reproduced this website in the main body of this issue. In the right column you will find selected resources and readings on China.

$3 Million Grant Opportunity

The U.S. Dept. of Education just announced a grant competition for consortia or associations of community colleges to enroll under-served students from target countries (Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Turkey). The purpose is to provide young foreigners, particularly women, with a first-hand look at American society and go home with skills needed to develop their countries. The grant would span three years, starting this November. The deadline for the proposals is September 1st. Another goal of the project is to encourage more community colleges to establish ties overseas. Click here to visit the notice.
