National Resource Center Highlight:
The University Center for International Studies
In 2006, three issues of World View's College Updates will highlight National Resource Centers and Area Studies Centers with which we work closely to provide resources to internationalize your college. In this first issue we will highlight the University Center for International Studies.
The University Center for International Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill (UCIS) brings leadership, innovation, and coordination to the mission of extending the University's international presence and global perspective. UCIS is home to an excellent international outreach program developed to enrich international education and bring the world to North Carolina schools, community colleges, and universities. Among the many services offered, UCIS provides access to online scholarly publications and other international resources, as well as offering educational presentations on other countries, global issues, and international current events. The program also has a lending library of cultural artifacts, books, and films. To learn more about this exciting program and how to incorporate their impressive resources into your college and classroom, keep reading below!
Scholarly Publications
As part of their Carolina Papers Series, UCIS posts online scholarly papers written by UNC faculty, staff, and graduate students. The series is interdisciplinary and integrates work from various fields, including Business, Health Affairs, Humanities, Law, and Social Sciences. Online Resources
UCIS offers a number of helpful online resources, including information on UNC's international initiatives, as well as a listing of international courses at UNC funded by UCIS. These links also include syllabi for the courses, and are an excellent resource for discovering ways to incorporate global issues into your own courses. While many aspects of the UCIS outreach program are designed for K-12 education, UCIS also boasts s a wealth of resources available for community college educators. These resources include:

Current Projects
UCIS recently sponsored an initiative by Professor Regina Cortina and the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education to publish a CD handbook for educators who work with students of Mexican origin. The CD provides information and resources to help meet the challenge of improving educational opportunities for the rising number of Mexican-born students in the US. Please contact Professor Cortina (cortina@email.unc.edu) for information on receiving one of these handbooks.
On March 2-3 UCIS will host the Navigating the Global South Conference, an interdisciplinary conference exploring the changing nature of the United States. For more information or to register, contact Kim Glenn

South Asia : Cultural Traditions, Contemporary Challenges
(March 28-29)
Our first regional seminar exclusively for Community College educators
This seminar will explore the history, culture, and politics of India and Pakistan with leading scholars from Duke, NC State, and UNC-Chapel Hill. General sessions will address major topics on this vital region's past and present. Concurrent sessions will continue focus on major issues in a seminar setting, and equip you to integrate South Asia into the curriculum.

Hispanics/Latinos in the Carolinas
(March 21-22)

East Asia: Tradition and Transformation
(March 22-23)
World View will offer its spring seminars on “Hispanics/Latinos in the Carolinas ” and “ East Asia : Tradition and Transformation” at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Both seminars include lectures, small group sessions, and classroom application sessions.
The Hispanics/Latinos in the Carolinas seminar (March 21-22) will offer opportunities to learn more about Latin America, to explore critical issues affecting the lives and education of Latino students, and to become aware of the resources and model programs to help Latino students succeed in school. A participant from each registering school will receive a CD on teaching Latino students and a pamphlet for Latino parents.
“East Asia: Tradition and Transformation” (March 22-23) will explore the history, culture, and politics of China, Japan, and Korea with leading scholars from Duke, NC State, and UNC-Chapel Hill. General sessions will address key issues of this vital region's past and present and concurrent sessions will equip educators to bring East Asia into the classroom.

GLOBAL MUSIC Program
In collaboration with the UNC Area Studies Centers, WXYC is launching a new monthly radio program. The program focuses on a particular world region each month, integrating both music from this part of the world and relevant expertise of university faculty. Each broadcast will be a live lesson interspersing music with dialogue. The first Global Music is airing soon and features Sufi music and culture, with Carl Ernst as guest. Professor Ernst is the Director of the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations, and a William R. Kenan Professor in the Department of Religious Studies.
