Grants to Internationalize Community College Courses
Five grants were recently awarded to North Carolina community college educators to help them internationalize courses, and five more will be awarded in the coming year. This grant program is funded by UNC's Center for Global Initiatives (CGI) and organized by World View. Each grantee receives $600 to compensate for time spent and to fund a trip to UNC-Chapel Hill for research. At UNC they will spend a day working with appropriate librarians and faculty arranged by World View. Our special thanks to Niklaus Steiner, Director of the Center for Global Initiatives, for the Center's funding of these grants.
Congratulations to this year's grantees: Alice Lentz from Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Theresea Gauthier from Cleveland Community College, and Misti Silver, Ron Davis, and Ryan Carter from Mayland Community College.
New grants to internationalize courses will be awarded for 2008. These grants support the addition of international content to existing courses that have little or no such content. Preference will be given to proposals that develop regularly taught and/or required courses, and courses that affect large numbers of students.
World View is currently accepting proposals for 2008 grants. Proposals will be accepted until January 15, 2008, and awards announced February 1. Mail proposals to the address on the attached proposal cover sheet or email them to nebolick@unc.edu.
To help you get started, we've attached examples of internationalized courses at Central Piedmont Community College and an example of an international module developed by the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education. You can review examples of internationalized Maricopa Community College courses here.
There also will be concurrent session workshops on internationalizing courses at the November 14-15 World View community college symposium, Globalization's Impact and Model Global Programs at Community Colleges in the U.S. We strongly encourage you to attend these sessions and submit a proposal to globalize one of your courses. The key for students to understand the global connections in their course material is for the faculty member to be regularly making these connections in the classroom.
Please call me at (919) 843-5332 or email me at nebolick@unc.edu if you have questions or need additional information.
