 Awards for Educators

Listed below are several opportunities for teachers and administrators to be recognized for their efforts and commitment to the field of education.  The subject area and grade level varies for each award.  Several deadlines have already passed for this school year, but keep a record of these awards and their web pages for next year.

Ag in the Classroom, NC Farm Bureau

The Ag in the Classroom Award sponsored by the NC Farm Bureau recognizes North Carolina teachers who do an outstanding job of incorporating agriculture into their curriculum. Eligibility is certified PreK-12 teachers, teaching in a NC classroom.  Deadline: March 15, 2004.

Coverdell Award for Excellence, US Peace Corps’ Coverdell World Wise Schools

The award pays tribute to educators who exhibit outstanding participation in the Peace Corps' Coverdell World Wise Schools global education program.  Teachers may apply individually or as a team.  Recipients are honored at an annual ceremony in Washington, DC.

David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award of the American Association of Community Colleges

Microsoft is partnering with AACC to recognize faculty excellence in the use of IT for instruction. The David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award will be given to two outstanding community college faculty who promote the use of information technology in education. The nomination deadline for the 2004 award has passed.  Check back in Summer 2004 for nomination packets for the 2005 award.  Eligibility includes current employment at an AACC member college, demonstrated consistent and exemplary use of technology in instruction, and part-time or fulltime faculty member in good standing.  Selected faculty receive a non-restricted, $5,000 honorarium.  Winners will be recognized at the AACC Annual Convention and will be featured in AACC publications.
 

DisneyHand Teacher Awards, Walt Disney Company

The Walt Disney Company is dedicated to supporting creative teaching strategies that engage children in learning.  Any-full time, certified, pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade teacher who is currently teaching is eligible.  In addition to recognition, a gala event and professional development, The Walt Disney Company awards cash prizes to the Honorees in the following manner: 40 Honorees each receive $10,000.  Schools of each of the 40 Honorees receive $5,000; and one Outstanding Teacher receives an additional $15,000.

Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award, US-Japan Foundation

The Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award, sponsored by the US-Japan Foundation is awarded annually to recognize two K-12 teachers who further mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese.  Deadline:  February 2, 2004.

The Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education

The Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education is given to an educator whose innovation and spirit encourage students to reach their fullest potential.  Up to three honorees are chosen annually to receive an award of $25,000.  Individuals presently committed to the cause of education are eligible.

International Reading Association

The International Reading Association presents a number of awards and grants each year to recognize outstanding teachers of reading and literacy at all levels and to support teachers' efforts to enhance their knowledge and teaching skills and to make meaningful contributions to their profession.  The Arbuthnot Award honors an outstanding college or university teacher of children's and young adults' literature.  The Eleanor M. Johnson Award recognizes a current outstanding elementary classroom teacher of reading/language arts.  The Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award honors an outstanding college or university teacher of reading methods or reading-related courses.  The Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award honors an outstanding regular classroom elementary teacher of reading and language arts for reflective writing about his or her teaching and learning process.  The Nila Banton Smith Award honors a middle or secondary school teacher who has shown leadership in translating theory and current research into practice for developing content area literacy.  The Teacher as Researcher Grant program is intended to support teachers in their inquiries about literacy and instruction.

Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education, Freedoms Foundation

The Leavey Award honors teachers from every grade level for work in promoting in their students a better understanding of the private enterprise system and what it means to the democratic system.  Each winning program earns a $7,500 award, with up to 20 programs recognized annually.

MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Awards, Jobs for the Future

Awards are given to colleges that are especially effective in helping underserved youth and adults succeed and advance in college and career. The award recognizes community colleges that, in different ways and in very different communities, make significant institutional commitments to helping first-time college-goers, new immigrants, working adults, welfare recipients, high school dropouts, and other populations with limited college experience and success prepare for further education or for a family-supporting career.

NCSS Award for Global Understanding, National Council for the Social Studies

The Award for Global Understanding is granted annually to recognize a social studies educator (or a team of educators) who has made notable contributions in helping social studies students increase their understanding of the world.. The award recipient receives the following: $2,000 cash award; commemorative gift; a session to present at the NCSS annual conference; publicity; complimentary NCSS conference registration; and up to $700 in transportation/lodging reimbursement.  Nominees must be social studies educators who are increasing social studies global understanding in K-12 settings and must be members of NCSS.  Nominees must also address several elements of global education as described in the NCSS Position Statement on Global Education.  Deadline: May 15, 2004.  Additional awards are sponsored by the NCSS.  For information visit http://www.socialstudies.org/awards/

National Educator Awards, Milken Family Foundation

The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards program provides public recognition and financial rewards to elementary and secondary teachers and principals who demonstrate exceptional educational talent.  Recipients receive a $25,000 award, which is presented at the Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference in June each year.  The department of education in each of the 47 participating states and the District of Columbia appoints an independent blue-ribbon committee to recommend candidates for selection to the Foundation. There is no nomination or application procedure for the Award.

NPCA Global TeachNet currently administers the following two educator recognition programs:

Global Educator Award
Each year, Global TeachNet recognizes K-12 educators who exhibit a commitment to bringing global education into U.S. classrooms. Teachers can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. Qualified applicants include Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) and non-RPCVs whose global education efforts in the classroom span at least one academic year.  Award winners receive a $500 monetary award and national recognition.
Peace Educator Award
This award recognizes exemplary K-12 educators for their efforts in promoting peace and international/intercultural understanding. Award winners receive a $500 monetary award and national recognition for outstanding efforts in peace education.

National Science Teachers Association

The National Science Teachers Association helps to promote several awards for teachers of all grade levels.  Some of the awards given include: The Ciba Exemplary Middle Level and High School Principal Awards, The Ciba Exemplary Middle Level and High School Teaching Awards, The DCAT Making a Difference Award, The Delta Education Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching, The Distinguished Informal Science Education Award, The distinguished Service to Science Education Awards, The Distinguished Teaching Award, The Estes Rocketry/Space Foundation Educator Award, and several others.

NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, National Education Association

The NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes excellence in teaching to those NEA members in public education.  The Award includes $25,000, celebration at The NEA Foundation's annual gala event in Washington, DC, a personalized commemorative gift, and national recognition.  All NEA members, including teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff are eligible. Nominees must be current members of their local NEA affiliate or bargaining unit.

North Carolina Center For International Understanding

NCCIU offers several awards each year for North Carolina public school teachers to participate in NCCIU exchanges.  These include the Carolyn Hunt Teacher Endowment, the Dan Royster Memorial/Wake County Citizens Award, the James G.K. McClure Teacher Award, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Awards:  Additionally, two Beattie Awards, are offered annually to NC public school teachers employed in Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools to participate in designated NCCIU exchanges.

Online Shared Learning Award, Global SchoolNet Foundation

The Global SchoolNet Foundation Online Shared Learning Award recognizes current classroom teachers, media specialists and various school-based educators who have distinguished themselves in the area of online learning. One educator per competition is selected for a cash award of $7,500. Ten finalists chosen from around the world will receive a cash award of $250.  Awards are presented in two categories: Recent Adopters (having up to four years experience), includes a cash gift of $2000 and an all-expense-paid trip to NECC 2004 in New Orleans June 21-23, 2004, and Pioneers (having more than four years experience) which includes a cash gift of $4000 and an all-expense-paid trip to NECC 2004.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Created by the White House and sponsored by the National Science Foundation, The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recognize superior K-12 science and mathematics teachers in the United States and its four jurisdictions.  Recipients receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and are invited to attend recognition events in Washington, DC.

RadioShack National Teacher Awards

The RadioShack National Teacher Awards are given to outstanding experienced and novice mathematics, science, and technology high school teachers. One hundred awards for $3,000 are given to teachers who have three or more years of classroom teaching experience, and ten teachers in their second or third year will receive $1,000. Nominations are accepted from principals and former recipients.  Teachers must be employed in a school that is enrolled in the RSNTA program.

The Shaklee Teacher Award, The Shaklee Institute

The Shaklee Teacher Award recognizes special education teachers in public or private schools and agencies.  Up to ten teachers of students with disabilities receive a $1,000 stipend and are invited to attend summer professional development sessions.  Winners are determined by specific student outcomes and related contributions as teachers of exceptional students.

United States-Eurasia Awards for Excellence in Teaching Program, American Councils for International Education

The United States-Eurasia Awards for Excellence in Teaching Program (TEA), administered by the American Councils for International Education, is accepting applications for 2004. Secondary school teachers of humanities, social sciences or language arts who have received teaching recognition may apply for an opportunity to travel to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine or Uzbekistan on a fully funded exchange program.  Teachers will travel for 2-3 weeks in October 2004.  Deadline:  February 2, 2004.
