English Language Newspapers from Around the World!

The recent National Geographic-Roper Survey on geographic literacy convincingly shows that young Americans possess frighteningly limited knowledge about the world in which they live. Incorporating newspapers is a great way to increase students' interest in and understanding of important current events. In this issue, we have provided a list of English language newspapers from almost 100 countries. Be sure to check out the "Web Resources" section in the right-hand column for some excellent ideas on ways to integrate front-page news into your teaching and create a more global perspective for your students.

National Geographic-Roper
Survey on Geographic Literacy

How Much Do
You Know
About the World?

Can you name the world's most spoken primary language? The most heavily fortified border on the planet? The current population of the United States?

A recent study commissioned by the National Geographic Society tested the geography knowledge of 18- to 24-year-olds across the U.S. to see how much they know about our world. How did they do? More know where the TV show CSI is set than can find Iraq on a map. The survey shows that too many young Americans have a limited understanding of the world and are lacking even the most basic skills for navigating the international economy or understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events. In response to these findings, NG and other leading parters in education and business have launched My Wonderful World, a campaign to increase global learning in school, at home, and in the community. Be sure to visit their website for more information on the study and to test your own global IQ!
