North Carolina in the World is a statewide collaborative effort to strengthen K-12 international education. At the request of Governor Mike Easley, the University of North Carolina's Center for International Understanding coordinates the effort. More than 100 North Carolina education, policy and business leaders are involved to help prepare students to thrive in the global marketplace of the 21st century. Most important for teachers, this website has an international education resource center which gives teachers a launching point for teaching and learning on the web. Powered by LEARN NC, it provides annotated links to hundreds of quality websites, many with multimedia, searchable by region, instructional purpose, and appropriate grade level. This is likely the best online database of international education resources available in North Carolina, and we encourage you to check it out!

Online Globalization Course

Beginning February 8, 2007, LearnNC will be launching a new, free, online course -- Globalization: An Introduction for Principals and Other School Leaders. The course will last six weeks and immerses principals and other school administrators in an intensive exploration of rapid global changes. It discusses global issues in government, economics, culture, technology, environment and health, and is an online version of World View's week-long on-campus “Global Education Leaders' Program.” Participants will read, discuss, and reflect on the most important issues facing America and the world today. The course will introduce educators to university and other resources to help them to continue learning about global issues. As a final project, each participant will present an Action Plan for their school or system to support the development of globally competitive graduates. Participants must be current school-based leaders (including principals, assistant principals, department heads, IB coordinators) or central office administrators in North Carolina school systems. Four CEU credits will be offered. The deadline for enrollment in the February class has passed, but LearnNC may be offering additional sections of this course, so make sure to visit their website.

MEGA
(Middle Educators Global Activities)

Vicarious Voyage: Connecting K-12
Classrooms to the Semester at Sea Program

The Vicarious Voyage
program is part of the Semester at Sea Program for college students, through
which a school class is "adopted" by a group of
3 to 5 students and communicates with them throughout the term. Personal exchanges during the voyage provide K-12
students with a very real connection to the experiences of those travelling around the world. Items sent home in "culture
packets" enable the teacher to make an international learning experience come alive in the local classroom. The Vicarious Voyage program has served more than 41,000 kindergarten through twelfth grade students in 1,370 classrooms across the nation.
BRIDGE Exchange Opportunity

BRIDGE (Building Respect through Internet Dialogue and Global Education) will
connect 24 secondary schools in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait, and Pakistan with counterparts in the United States through
collaborative online projects and physical exchanges. As part of this
program, there is an opportunity for schools in any state to host a teacher and
four students from one of these countries for a three-week visit in 2003.
Additional funds have been secured to enable one teacher from each of the 23
U.S. schools to join their colleagues from the 8 countries in a Regional
Workshop in Egypt during June 2003. Applicants must be affiliated

Friendship Through Education Consortium

Peace

Peace Corps offers three programs for

Corps Partnership Program provides an opportunity for a class to take part

a volunteer over two years' time. By signing up for the World Wise School CyberVolunteer program list-serv, participating teachers and students receive a monthly e-mail

GlobalQuest offers twelve-week semester programs in international settings for
students heading into their senior year of high school or high school graduates
between school and college. Initial semester offerings are based in Thailand,

The LIONS International Youth Exchange Program is a unique cultural learning opportunity.
Participants of the Youth Exchange Program must be between the ages of 15 and 21;
