Our Deepest Fear

Te'Quan

I had to write a poem for the program I was in called T.E.A.S. I really did not want to do it, but if I did I would earn 60 dollars. It wasn’t a lot of money, but it wasn’t much to do. All I had to do was recite a poem. I never dreamed of speaking in front of a hundred people.

Speaking in front of people was really not my thing. I could talk in front of my friends, but speaking in front of a hundred people did not feel comfortable to me.

The day of the performance, I was very nervous. I did not want to mess up and sound stupid. It was a bunch of people, mostly parents and a few children. About 2 minutes before I went on the stage, I was reading the poem, “Our deepest fear,” to make sure I knew all the words.

When they called my name out, I walked up to the mike and said the poem. I spoke loud and clear to make sure they heard me. When I finished, the crowd cheered and clapped!

I felt good reciting the poem because I didn’t think I could do it. I earned 60 dollars for performing. It was a good experience.
