A Thousand Yards

Tremaine

When I first made up my mind about the SMS football try-outs, I was nervous. I just knew that I would be the underdog of the team and knew that I wouldn’t get no playing time.

During try-outs, we got our pads. Most players were scared and didn’t know what to expect. This would be my first time playing for my school’s football team. In practice conditioning, all we did was up-downs and sprints in the hot and humid weather. After all, me and my friends made it thru. At the end of each practice, we did this drill called 4th quarter where you had to sprint at least 1000 yards. This drill kept us in shape. I was aching in pain all over. Many players thought about quitting but made it all the way. Also, if you didn’t stretch right you would be out immediately. We did this before and after each practice.

After try-outs, coach said that I made it! I was so happy and thought that I could do anything. At that moment, I felt like I had ADHD! I was so hyper and couldn’t stop moving. All my friends

came up to me and congratulated me when I got back to the side line. I thought about all those sprints and told myself, “This is what I’ve been waiting for.” The pain went away while glory and happiness took its place.
