La Habana
I was lucky enough to visit Choco's studio on two occasions. First, I went with the UNC and AU students for an overview of his work and techniques. Then, I translated in a 2-hour meeting between Choco, his wife, then-provost Bernadette Gray-Little, Bob Miles, Russell, Marel García and her husband Fidelito. Much to my shame, I had to fumble my way through Choco's explanations of his methodologies and materials because I didn't know the technical terms in Spanish or English. Anything other than "oil and water" or "oil on canvas" was beyond my unfortunately quite limited body of knowledge. Hopefully, we'll get lucky this year and he'll be able to conduct at UNC the workshops that have been planned for years. And perhaps then I'll have a chance to learn some new terms.
