My Stgo Escapades
Arriving in Santiago in late August, I spent my first two months living with a host family in Las Condes, an isolated enclave of upper class individuals. I enrolled in Bridge Linguatec's TEFL program in Santiago and began teaching for Linguatec in late September. Now, of course, the company offers training courses in Barcelona, Cusco, Himachal (India), Oaxaca, and Playa del Carmen, which makes me wonder if I would have chosen Santiago had I had the above options. When I was registering, I had the option of Denver, Rio, Sao Paolo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago, though I like to think that things work out the way they're supposed to -- that I was supposed to be in Santiago and meet the people that I did when I did. My life certainly would have been quite different had I ended up elsewhere.
After six months in Santiago, I left to work on-site in BHP Billiton's Cerro Colorado asset in the north of Chile. I returned to the capital city in late July and decided, after 4 days, that I would return to the US to focus on the GRE subject test and figure out where and with whom I wanted to study. These photos stretch between the RM and its surrounding areas, including trips to Valparaíso, Horcón, and Isla Negra. Santiago and I had a bit of a love-hate relationship, but I'd like to think that I was able to figure out a lot in a city in which you could find BMWs and gated homes, outdoor bars and a public library (all right near my house -- everything I need in a 5-block radius! Perfect!), and horse-drawn carts driving past BASF and Unilever factories. I met some great people, and some not so great people, and experimented with various philosophical and practical approaches to life.
