Really, Really Down South
Although I didn't really have the chance to travel around Chile very much while I worked for Linguatec, I did steal away in mid-February, 2004 with Pavo for a few days in the south. We ended up in Pucón, a center of adventure tourism, which, for those of you who know me or Turkey, was very much *not* an Allison and Andrea place. We, warriors that we are, struggled (hot springs), suffered (horse riding), and strained ourselves (watching waterfalls in a misty pool) all in the name of the anti sloth. Turkey actually ended up with an injury sustained in a round of X-Games caliber activity (exiting the tepee), though we did one legitimatly strenous activity in white water rafting. Unfortunately, we couldn't bring a camera on the raft due to the necessity of using both hands to paddle down (it was our first time! We weren't about to go up) the River Trancura, but we got to see some breathtaking places, including a spot on the river where you can see three volcanoes, the Villarrica (2,840 m), the Quetrupillán (2,360 m) and the Lanin (3,746 m), simultaneously.
I also travelled down to Puerto Montt to explore in a few days the surrounding areas -- the island of Chiloé, the towns of Puerto Varas and Frutillar, and the Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales (Petrohué). A lot of the landscape, that is, the greenery, the temperature, and the lakes, felt like New Hampshire ... albeit with more rocks and mountains. It was, quite simply, a beautiful place.
