Kermit and Marilyn Hankock
face a falling of the sky

Contracted farmers in North Carolina are experiencing just what Chicken Little did - the sky falling down. Since the 1950s and '60s, poultry companies in this state have created a contracting system for poultry farming, forcing all chicken farmers to enter into contracts that dictate how and what stage of production the farmers will produce. These contracts keep a farmer in business, but can also have devastating effects.

Kermit and Marilyn Hancock discuss what their life is like after having been "cut-off" from receiving chickens. Their four empty chicken houses stand as a reminder of what raising the birds and dealing with contracts was like: risky, difficult, frustrating, and unyielding.
