Higuera de la Sierra

Every Christmas, the people from the town reenact scenes from the birth of Christ on charts that are pulled through the narrow streets of the village. They are followed by the three wise Kings who bring candy and presents to all the children in the village.

Romería de Zufre

The Zufre 'Romeria' and Fair. End of August to the beginning of September. Starting with a procession, on the last Sunday of August, where an image of the patron saint, Virgin Mary, is carried from the village church to a chapel some 12 kilometers away, the whole town comes out to take part in the pilgrimage. The romería ends with a popular feast in the paseo.

Almonaster

Tucked away on the southwestern edge of the park is Almonaster, one of the least spoilt villages of the Sierra. It has a magnificent hilltop mosque dating from the 10th century situated in amongst the ruins of a castle. The mezquita's mihrab, the prayer niche facing Mecca, is the oldest example of its kind in Spain. Inside the well-restored interior are five naves, the mihrab and many arches supporting the ceiling. Examples of many different building stages, some dating from Roman and Visigoth eras, remain. Next to the mosque is a small bullring, which you can see into by climbing the mosque's minaret.

Mérida

The present-day National Museum of Roman Art replaced the old Archaeological Museum of Mérida, which had been created by Order in Council on March 26, 1838. The present-day museum, the work of Rafael Moneo Vallés, was inaugurated on September 19, 1986, as a key exponent of the Romanisation of Hispania explained through the finds obtained at Mérida's archaeological sites. It is a centre for research into and diffusion of Roman culture, where conferences, colloquiums, lectures, courses, exhibitions and many other national and international events take place.
