Sierra

The extreme west of Sierra Morena is an eroded pasture of soft slopes, broken by calcareous massifs, some with grottos, the most outstanding of which is the Gruta de las Maravillas ("Grotto of the Marvels") in Aracena, with visitable galleries that exceed the length of a kilometer.

The first part passes through a rich scenery in meadows of holm oaks, and in the most humid places, of cork trees. In these meadows and in general through all that cross the route, the Iberian pig is raised. From Hinojales to Cortegana the scenery changes form; the grayish green colours of the meadows are substituted by the brilliant greens of the chestnuts in the summer and spring, or through the roses and browns if it is autumn or winter. This is the most humid part and richest in fountains famous for the pure water and streams.

In Fuente Heridos it is the Villa Onuba garden, with interesting trees such as the Spanish fir and the sequoya. Besides the chestnuts, in this zone fruit orchards exist in the valleys of the streams, with an abundance of pears, apples and pippins. From Cortegana a flat zone appears with pasture lands and thicket until Aroche where one frequently sees black vultures. Finally, Alajár emphasizes excellent views from the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, on the cliff of Arias Montano.
