Shaver-Crandell, Annie and Paul Gerson.  The Pilgrim’s Guide to Santiago de Compostela: a Gazetteer.  London: Harvey Miller Publishers, 1995.

[Sloane – BX2321.S3 S448 1995]

This work provides information about geographical places.  It includes a translation into English of the ‘Pilgrim’s Guide’ found in the Codex Calixtinus as well.  The introduction to the ‘Pilgrim’s Guide’ discusses such things as the literary background of the guide, the pilgrimage, the routes, the cathedral, etc.  There is also an introduction to the gazetteer, which includes information about the role of the religious orders in the pilgrimage and how the pilgrimage has been a means of spreading culture.  The gazetteer has descriptions of the monuments that can be seen along the routes in alphabetical order.  There is also a glossary of architectural terms at the end to help people better understand the descriptions, a plan of Santiago de Compostela that identifies places mentioned in the gazetteer, and a list of the pilgrimage routes.
