1996 Hillbilly Classic

Unofficial Results

Well, in a suprising show of timeliness, I am doing these results the Tuesday after the tournament. We left Chapel Hill about 7:00 on Friday with a huge team and small expectations (at least for me). Got into Knoxville about 1:00 am, and hit the Flamingo, where a crappy local band was playing. Ditched that, and fell asleep. Our first game Saturday was against Ohio State. Uh oh, trouble. I had never lost to OSU, but heck, there is a first time for everything. In about 5 minutes I could tell we were done, we ended up losing 11-5, and it was only that close because they let up on our second stringers. But, thankfully, we had UT-B next, and I swear, I will never lose to a B team from anywhere (except for maybe Florida). This was a good chance for everyone to get a chance to play, and gain some experience. The last game of the day was against Vanderbilt. I was worried about that game, because Vandy has some players, just no bench. They have two crafty old guys, one younger guy named Adam, who is phenomenal, and this other guy who might not have been that great of a swimmer, but he owned me with his skip shot. The lowlight of the game was Adam turning Jeremy into Tommy Turnstile one time in the hole. We won 10-8 or something. That was sort of lucky. The weather on Saturday was the worst I have ever played in, all rainy, so was sort of a drag, but it was beautiful Sunday. Saturday night we worked Dante's, which was the tournament social site, and then I went over to the LIBRARY, which if you have ever been to Chapel Hill, is like a redneck, backwoods Player's. What did I expect? At least they played 'Stayin' Alive'. And I got to meet the legendary #4 from Ohio State, and his name is Brian Lundy. Sunday, we beat Tennessee A 6-5 for third place, quite a game, they had a man up in the final 20 seconds, but took an ill advised shot which I calmly denied (that is the perks of writing the summaries!). After our game I stuck around and saw UF beat OSU like 10-8 in the finals. Those guys just keep getting it done. They never stop swimming. The only low point was that I didn't get to see the switch handed crow, or even the regular crow, becasue Scott was watching an EXCITING football game, yeah, 65-0. Trip back was pretty uneventful. Thanks again, Mike, for a great tournament.
