Education and Academic Honors
- Graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with honors as William C. Whitaker Scholar. I have a B.A. in journalism and mass communication with a minor in chemistry.
- While in school, I was honored by inclusion on the Dean's list as well as academically based membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Gamma Sigma Alpha Scholastic Society.
Work Experience
- As a member of the Teach for America national teacher-corps, I am dedicated to helping close the educational achievement gap in our country. Currently, I'm a science teacher in St. Louis, Mo. My hope is that I can provide my students with the tools necessary to attain a better education now and in the future.
- Some joked I wasn't taking on responsibility by deciding to work for my fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, but I used the experience to develop leadership and alcohol education programming for more than 6,000 undergraduates on 134 college campuses. Working on programming with international impact, I headed the planning for six educational weekends serving a record number of students.
- While working with students at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions I was able to inspire them to achieve at their highest possible levels. One student realized a 400 point score gain.
Journalism Honors
- Hearst Journalism Awards - First Place in Hard News Radio Broadcast News (2003)
- Society of Professional Journalists - Mark of Excellence Award (2003)
- Broadcast Education Association - Third Place in Student Audio Newscaster (2003)
Non-journalism Activities
- I conducted an independent study in public policy examining the effects of changing the number of hours that medical residents can work
- I participated in research with Daniel Gitterman, Ph.D., in the public policy department working on project relating to health care for The Brookings Institution
- A member of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, I was named an international undergraduate leadership mentor and also received an international award for outstanding chapter officer.
- As an intern for Dateline NBC I gained valuable hands-on experience with producing network television. Internet and telephone based research skills were used to book interviews and develop stories for air. The highlight was field-producing and conducting an interview at the FBI which ultimately was part of an "Insider Report" on local NBC stations across the country. I also received credits for contributing to a Dateline piece on Ron Reagan.
- CBS Radio Network "picked up" some of my stories. listen to "Turkey Bowl" or listen to "Transplant Money"
- WUNC-TV aired a 6.5 minute piece for which I was the lead writer. The piece, about sexually transmitted infections, aired across North Carolina.
- During the summer of 2003, I served as the weekend news producer at WCHL 1360 AM, a commercial news/talk station. I was completely responsible for writing, editing and getting to-air the weekend newscasts. I also developed the current format for "The Car Show." I produce the content, host the show, and put together a multi-week ad campaign to promote the show. Because of extensive on-air experience, I have developed a strong voice presence and the ability to effectively board operate. I am often called upon to substitute anchor newscasts when the regular talent can not anchor.
- While working on Carolina Week, the twice-weekly campus news broadcast, I held many jobs. I think my time as assignment editor is notable as, during this same year, we were recognized as one of the best, non-daily college broadcasts in the country by the Society of Professional Journalists. I also reported and worked as a supervising technician. To get a feel for the professionalism of the operation, visit www.carolinaweek.org.
- Good Morning America asked me to be a production assistant during their visit to Chapel Hill in April 2002.
- I served as assistant graphics editor for The Daily Tar Heel, the Pacemaker-winning campus paper. In addition to designing and editing graphics for print, I managed a staff for daily assignments. See my samples under "journalism work."
