NEW MERLIN GERIN® SPD PROTECTS AGAINST
TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE UP TO 80,000 AMPS

Compact, DIN-rail mounted Multi 9 also assures OEM design flexibility

PALATINE, Ill. - Aug. 22, 2002 - The new MERLIN GERIN® Multi 9 Surge Protection Device (SPD) reduces maintenance repair costs and prevents data loss by ensuring reliable operation of end-users' equipment. For OEMs, the parallel, DIN-rail mountable Multi 9 SPD ensures superior design flexibility with terminal connected devices that include one-, two- and four-pole models.

The Multi 9 SPD helps lower service costs and pre-empts the need to purchase new equipment by reducing the wear and damage caused by common, unseen transient events. Increased reliability also reduces unexpected downtime and prevents the loss of data. The Multi 9 SPD mounts to industry-standard rails, easily conforming to production processes. Its compact size simplifies installation and preserves cabinet space.

The Multi 9 family is the only DIN-rail mounted offering that meets OEMs' needs for a wide range of applications, with models available in most international voltages for both single- and three-phase power systems. The MERLIN GERIN Multi 9 SPD can be attached to custom control panels, telecommunications applications, PLC automation cabinets, industrial electronics, single- or three-phase power systems as well as numerous other OEM applications.

A plug-in module on the single-pole Multi 9 SPD enables module replacement without unwiring electrical connections to avoid costly rewiring and extended downtime. Its thermal fuse protects against extreme surge currents and prevents dangerous thermal runway conditions.

SQUARE D INTRODUCES VENTILATED NEMA TYPE 3R MCC
FOR ENCLOSING AC DRIVES, SOFT STARTS

Enclosures lower maintenance and installation costs, help increase uptime

PALATINE, Ill. - Aug. XX, 2002 - Traditionally, motor control center (MCC) drive and soft start outdoor packages (NEMA 3R enclosures) were designed as special engineered solutions that included air conditioners or other expensive cooling packages and required installation under a permanent shelter. To solve this problem, Square D/Schneider Electric has introduced a standard ventilated NEMA Type 3R MCC for enclosing SQUARE D® AC drives and soft starts. The SQUARE D Model 6 MCC will increase uptime and reduce costs without sacrificing performance.

This new MCC may be applied wherever motors are located outdoors and can benefit from speed control or soft starting. Typical applications include water/wastewater pumping stations, petrochemical pump control, pipeline and oilfield drilling, asphalt/aggregate plant control, commercial construction HVAC controls, utility pump control and OEM/system integrators.

The fan-forced ventilated design, with louvered and filtered openings and various self-contained environmental controls, prevents drives and soft starts from shutting down due to overheating. Cooling is achieved with fans, eliminating expensive cooling options, such as air conditioning. The filtered louvers located in the MCC door help keep debris out of the MCC.

The air pressure inside the cabinet, produced by the positive pressure ventilation system, helps force out dirt and contaminants. This provides a cleaner environment for the drive and soft start electronics than would be created with exhaust fans mounted at the upper vents.

The dual door fans, which have been weatherized for outdoor use, circulate fresh air through the enclosures, prolonging the life of the MCC and reducing maintenance costs. Space heaters and humidity controls supply heat when necessary to prevent condensation from forming, thus preventing unwanted shutdown of the drives and softstarts. On account of the self-contained power supply, there is no need for external power from the customer.
