The portfolio of Alex Kowalski

Alex KowalskiPeople only sing "Happy Birthday" to me every four years. That's usually the first thing I tell people when I meet them: I was born on Leap Year.

When I'm not chattering about my age, however, I try to focus on writing, and I do a lot of that as a Journalism - News Editorial major with a Creative Writing minor. I work (volunteer, I guess, because there's no money involved) for the Daily Tar Heel, UNC-Chapel Hill's newspaper; Blue & White magazine, another UNC publication; and for my food site, The Biscuit. I'm also interested in designing web sites, photography and putting everything together on the World Wide Web.

The way we communicate is changing, and with the shift to computers, I want to be able to incorporate everything into one big package. I've been picking up a Computer Science minor so I can merge the programming, design and writing skills into one creation. Some day I hope to create a new way for readers to receive their news that touches all of their senses. Maybe I can reshape the news industry so it has a more sustainable future.

If you'd like to know a little more, I go to the University of North Carolina, though I reside near Boston in the summer months. Chapel Hill has many perks, but I do miss the city. (I'm realizing, though, that the southern town packs a punch when it comes to cuisine.)

When I'm not in the classroom or newsroom, I'm usually out on University Lake rowing with the men's crew team. I love the sport and representing the Tar Heels, but you sure do get a lot of blisters.

Finally, I love food very much. It really does affect my schedule, planning around good meals. But check out The Biscuit if you'd like to know more.
