Andrea in New MexicoPhoto Journeys

In the summer of 1999, my boyfriend and I took a road trip across America. Before we left, we purchased an old Minolta SLR camera. It changed my life. During that trip, I took photographs of everything I found interesting, from snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks to naked dancers at a festival in Eugene, Oregon. When we returned to North Carolina a month and a half later, I decided to make good use of my new love and finally go back to school. I re-entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the fall of 2000 in the Visual Communication Photojournalism sequence.

Being a photojournalist has given me the opportunity to meet and photograph many different people and places. I like to think of each assignment as a "photo journey" - a continuation of the journey out west that began it all. I have taken photos of Native American pow wows, North Carolina cotton farmers and middle school Valentine's Day dances. One of my favorite photo journeys came in the spring of 2001 when I was granted a photo pass to take pictures at a Phil Lesh and Friends concert in Asheville, North Carolina. I continued to photograph Phil Lesh and Friends for a total of seven shows and consider the end product to be some of my most satisfying work.

Currently I am working on a photo story about some friends of mine for my Documentary Photojournalism class. I am looking forward to graduating in May and more photo journeys in the future . . .
