A beautiful view of the Cape at sunset

Vacationing in Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always loved to go on vacations with my family. We always ended up going to the same spot ever summer which was Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. We figured this was the most conveinent vacationing spot since my mom has a fear of airplanes and my dad refuses to be stuck on cruise ship for any length of time! That pretty much eliminated most exciting vacations. I finally got the chance to fly for the first time in October of 2000, without my parents of course. Ever since, I have always thought about where I would like to visit if I had the opportunity. The area in Massachusetts including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket seems to me like a perfect vacationing spot, so I focused my research on this area of Massachusetts.

The five best websites on Cape Cod:

*Title of Web page: The Electronic Gateway to Cape Cod
*Web Address: www.capecodonline.com
*Brief Description: This website offers information on almost every aspect of what Cape Cod has to offer. It provides links to the newspaper of Cape Cod, The Cape Cod Times, so that you can find out what's going on in the news. It also provides links to weather, a visitor's guide, entertainment, and the CapeWeek News. The visitor's guide is especially helpful for my purposes because it provides information that would interest a traveler. It offers information on the area beaches and golf resorts, a dining guide, a lodging directory, vacation rentals, traffic reports for the area, and live aerial cameras of the Cape. The entertainment section offers information on upcoming concerts and events, as well as information on local nightclubs and movie listings. The CapeWeek News provides information on the community, local sports, business and national news.
*Source: Cape Cod Online is a service of Cape Cod Times Newspaper, Hyannis, MA.

*Title of Web Page: Visit Cape Cod
*Web Address: www.visitcapecod.com
*Brief Description: This site is especially helpful for my purposes because it is created to serve an audience that would like to visit the Cape Cod area. I found it especially interesting that is listed all the towns on the Cape, and provided links to each one. I am planning on visiting Orleans, so I was able to click on the Orleans link to learn about its population, town information, activities, beaches, churches and libraries. It was nice to be able to narrow my search to the specific town that I plan to visit. In addition, the website offered information on Cape Cod as a whole, including weather, tide information, lottery information, bus and ferry schedules, galleries, and other activities available for traveler's. I especially enjoyed two particular links on this page. One link showed pictures taken from a space shuttle and it really gave me a neat perspective of the size of the area. The other link I found interesting was entitled "Cape Cod Memories". This link allowed me to view other traveler's fond experiences and personal accounts of their trip to the Cape. These accounts really gave me insight into what I should consider doing on my vacation to help make it memorable.

*Title of Web Page: The Source for Outdoor Information on Cape Cod
*Web Address: www.capecodoutdoors.com
*Brief Description: This site was especially useful in providing information on outdoor activities in Cape Cod. There were links to fly fishing guides, sporting guides (including shell fishing, hunting, and water fowling), nature (including diving, birding, hiking and biking) and boating (including power boating, sailing, canoeing, and kayaking). In addition, the web site provided links to articles that were written especially for fishing in the Cape, focusing on both saltwater and freshwater fishing. There was also a link to a fishing calendar, which displayed the optimal times to fish as well as some of the best places to fish.

*Title of Web Page: Scenes of Cape Cod
*Web Address: www.allcapecod.com
*Brief Description: This site offered useful information on where to eat, what to do, where to stay, general information and events in Cape Cod. It allowed me to consider more options for places to dine and things to do during my visit. In addition, it provided a feature link for this month. This month's feature was Cape Cod Central Railroad, which is a scenic train ride through the Cape, extending from Hyannis to the Cape Cod Canal. I found this especially useful for my purposes because part of my research goal was to find information on scenic tours offered in the area. This was perfect because it provided a schedule of times of operation and where to board the train. For traveler's interested in group and family information for the train ride, there was a list of prices especially for these vacationer's.

*Title of Web Page: Cape Cod Travel
*Web Address: www.capecodtravel.com
*Brief Description: This web site was created especially for the traveler. It offers any and all the information you could ever need for planning a trip to Cape Cod. The site is easy to get around and has nice graphics! There are links especially for vacation planning, which offers information on lodging and rentals, attractions, dining out, weddings, getting around, maps, services, and town information. There is also a link to special features for the traveler, which offers travel tips, coupons, and photo galleries. One especially helpful feature for my sake was the link to "last minute lodging", which helped find available lodging at the last minute. There was also an interesting link to the "marketplace" which offered information on tours, including helicopter tours. This was helpful for me to weigh my options of a scenic train ride (from a previous web page) with a helicopter tour.

*Title of Web Page: Cape Cod Travel Guide
*Web Address: www.mvtraveler.com
*Brief Description: This website offered a travel guide for Cape Cod, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, which are two islands off of Cape Cod. I thought that it was useful to consider travel information to these two areas because I may visit one or both of these areas depending on if time permits. In addition, the web site offered travel information for specific areas of Cape Cod, allowing me to browse the specific area of which I plan to vacation. There were links to the Upper, Mid, Lower, and Outer Cape. I was able to explore more closely information on the Outer Cape, which is where Orleans is located. The link provided information on Orleans and historical tidbits about it. One especially interesting piece of information I found was the fact that Orleans is the only town in the United States that was fired upon by an enemy in WWI and the War of 1812. Included in the specific information on Orleans, there was information on the downtown area restaurants and shops. There was also information on Nauset Beach, one of the Cape's most famed beaches.

Five non-internet sources

1)Hamburger, Philip. (1995, July 17). "Arriving." The New Yorker, v71, 24. Call Number: Davis Folio - AP2.N6763.

2) Livermore, Beth. (1996, Sept). "Club Cape Cod: Off season is the best time to explore New England's playground." Women's Sports and Fitness, v18, 31. Call Number: GV709.W65

3)Non-print source: James Taylor's Greatest Hits. Warner Bros. Non-print Compact Disc, 1988. Call Number: 65-CD468.

*This source does not meet the exact criteria of my search. However, while researching, I discovered that James Taylor spent every summer of his childhood in Cape Code. Recently, he finally settled in Martha's Vineyard. Because James Taylor is also a UNC graduate, I found this fact even more interesting. This was the best non-print source I could find that related to Cape Cod.

Internet Story

Title: Who really owns Ajax?

Topic Area: Net Controversy On September 24, 1998, the Colgate-Palmolive Corporation launched an attack against Benjamin C. Kite, the creator of the web site, www.ajax.org, claiming that the domain name conflicted with its products and violated the Ajax trademark. The web site did not acknowledge any Ajax product in any way, and therefore Mr. Kite saw no discrepancy in claiming the domain name. The corporation requested that its creator abandon the domain name. If he refused, Colgate-Palmolive would then bring the discrepancy to the attention of Network Solutions, which is responsible for assigning domain names. Mr. Kite responded to the request by explaining that any ".org" site is created for the establishment of free and non-profit organizations. On the other hand, had he tried to obtain a ".com" site, he would have been unable to because such sites are reserved for commercial purposes, like that of a multi-national corporation like Colgate-Palmolive Corporation. After several requests for Kite to abandon the web page on behalf of Ajax products, Kite continued to persist in his defense. He argued that a surrender would demand re-imbursement by Colgate-Palmolive for the time and trouble it would take to change the domain name and notify its users. In this case, Kite equivocated this amount at more than $5,000. After numerous written disputes, the Vice-President of the Colgate-Palmolive Corporation concluded that the current use of the domain name www.ajax.org would not cause confusion with the Ajax trademark defined by the corporation. By October 14, 1998, the disputing was history and Mr. Kite won out. The Colgate-Palmolive Corporation notified Network Solutions that a resolution had been reached. Both parties ended up happy for the most part, especially Mr. Kite who was thankful that the corporation was open-minded and found validity in his argument.
